Peer Support within the Criminal Justice System-3-day Sequential Intercept Model Training

“Forensic Peer Specialists embody the potential for recovery for people who confront the dual stigmas associated with serious mental illness and criminal justice involvement” (Davidson and Rowe, 2008)

Description:

This 18-hour continuing education opportunity is designed to enhance the capacity of Certified Peer and Recovery Specialists tofulfill a serious gap in supportive services forjustice involved individuals. Grounded in the philosophy of peer support services, this training uses a mutual-learningapproach and dialogue-driven process to develop understanding of the impact of forensic involvement and introduces the Sequential Intercept Modelas a tool to highlight the unique needs of individuals and discover resources necessary to effectively navigate within and beyond the criminal justice system.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this training participants will gain knowledge and skill to:

Use lived experiences as an example of recovery and resiliency

Identify and advocate for the needs of individuals in the criminal justice system

Assist an individual in navigating service systems (mental health, criminal justice,etc.)

Model self-advocacy such that an individual learns howto advocate for self

Support the individual's journey toward achieving personal recovery goals

Resources Needed:

Laptop or Desktop PC with Webcam and Microphonenote that smart phones may not present a large enough screen to engage in the presented material

Zoom or other Virtual Meeting platformPMHCA or Organization provided

Personal Technology (IT) Support for Computer/Software – Facilitators are not responsible forsoftware/equipment difficulties.

Trauma Informed Host – PMHCA or Organization provided to maintain attendance and monitor participants’ reactions to trauma inducing material
